About James Matthews

James Matthews comes from a family with a rich sculptural history. He grew up in an environment of traditional figurative art and was captivated by the drawings and bronze sculptures that surrounded him.
His grandfather John F. Matthews was a prominent sculptor in the 1950?s and exhibited at the 1951 Festival of Britain alongside Dobson, Epstein, Moore and other renowned sculptors of the time. James`s father Nicholas is also a figurative sculptor and letter-carver. He lives in France where he runs his own gallery.
James studied under the tutelage of sculptor Allan Sly at Wimbledon School of Art, where he discovered his passion for portrait sculpture. He hopes his work will contribute to preserving this ancient and diminishing art form. James uses the traditional technique of modelling the subject in clay from both life sittings and photographs; the finished clay portraits are moulded and cast in bronze using the lost wax process.
Portrait sculpture has an incredible presence; James`s portraits capture likeness and character in a manner unparalleled by photography. He is happy in the knowledge that over time his sculpted portraits will become uniquely treasured family heirlooms, which constantly provide a very direct link with the past.
James has two portraits sculpted by his grandfather. One is of his great grandfather and the other is of himself as a small boy. They are two of the most precious objects he owns.

"A sculptor is a person obsessed with the form and shape of things."

Customer comment on 'Dog Fox' by Tessa Hayward
Dear Peter,
Enclosed is photo of my lovely fox, placed into an area which I`m developing as a small bluebell and white birch woodland. I`m absolutely delighted with the sculpture!
Would you please pass a copy on to Tessa (Hayward), with my thanks and very best wishes.
